NCAA Division I Men & Women

Joseph Lapira and Notre Dame (15-6-2)  ended their run in the quarterfinals with a 3-2 loss to fourth seeded University of Virginia.    The Irish advanced to the round of eight in a close a 1-0 double overtime upset of the # 5 Maryland Terrapins.  Lapira drove in the golden goal with minutes left in the second OT.  He also scored the lone goal in round two as the Irish shutout the University of Illinois-Chicago 1-0.   Joseph received the Mac Hermann National Player of the Year Award.and was named the Big 10 Offensive Player of the Year. (Both firsts in Notre Dame's history!)  He leads the country in both goals and points with 22 goals and 6 assists (50 points).  He has been named the National Player of the Week multiple times by College Soccer News, Top Drawer Soccer, Soccer Times, and Soccer America.

Clemson (13-4-2) and Scott Rossman fell 3-0 in the round of 16 to a strong UCLA team.  They won their match in the tourmanent's secpmd rpimd - a 3-1 win over Gardenr-Webb which won their first round match against UAB in PK's.  The Tigers travel to UCLA for their third round match up with the number 8 seed on Sunday.  The are the number 9 seed in the NCAA tourmanent.

UNC Greensboro (16-7-1) and Jarrett Gautreaux lost in the Round of 16 to Northwestern, 2-1, in a balanced matchup.  The Spartans were on an upset run, defeating 6th seeded West Virginia 2-1 in overtime to advance to the Round of 16, and  dumping Virginia Tech 2-1 in the first round of the tournament.   They had earned an automatic bid to the tournament by winning the Southern Conference Tournament, shutting out their three tournament opponents while scoring 7 goals. 

Gardner-Webb Univeristy (10-8-3) and Dane Geraci advanced over UAB in PK's but dropped their second round match 3-1 to Clemson.  Gardner-Webb captured the Atlantic Sun Conference title to enter the NCAA tournament. 

 

Texas A&M (16-6-1) and Melissa Garey battled UNC to the last minute, but went home with a 3-2 loss.  The Aggies advanced to the Elite Eight with a 2-1 win over the University of Virginia.    Melissa scored the game winner in the Aggies' second round 4-0 win over SMU.  Earlier in the weekend, the Aggies downed Grambling State 5-0.  (Grambling State, the winner of the SWAC has no LA players on the roster!)  The Aggies earned the number eight spot in the NCAA Tournament based on the difficulty of their schedule and winning the Big XII regular season.  Melissa is a team captain and is third in scoring on the team with 6 goals and 4 assists.

Navy (22-2-0) and standout goalkeeper Lizzie Barnes could not stop the UNC attack in second round action.  The Tar Heels drove in 4 goals and held the Midshipmen to one shot.  In first round action, Navy topped William & Mary in PK's.  Lizzie made a save on William & Mary's sixth shot to earn the win.  Navy captured the Patriot League's regular season and tournament titles, with the nation's top ranked defense - only 3 goals scored against them!  Lizzie earned the 2006 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year award and was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week three times.  She stopped 61 of the 64 shots taken on her!  And, she was named to the CoSIDA Women's Soccer Academic All-District II Team!

McNeese (10-6-2) captured the Southland Conference Tournament title but fell 2-0 to SMU in the first round at Texas A&M.  Kamryn Koch, Heather Goodly, Keli Gambrell & Cheyenne Moeller all represent LA on the team.  Kamryn leads the Cowgirls with 10 goals (including the game winner in the tournament final) and has been named to the All Southland Conference Second Team this year

 

NCAA Division II Men & Women

The University of Tampa Spartans (17-2-1) and Nicole Murphy stumbled and lost to Grand Valley State 2-0 in the first national semifinal of the NCAA tournament. They had advanced to the Division II FInal Four with a 5-0 trouncing of Tusculum in the Quarterfinals.  The Spartans defeated West Florida 2-0 and Nova Southeastern 3-0 in the first round they hosted   Tampa captured the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Tournament title in a double overtime win over St. Leo.  Nicole earned second team All-SSC honors for her defensive efforts.

Armstrong Atlantic (18-4-1) and Maggie Kennedy fell 1-0 to Tusculum in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  The Pirates earned an at large bid to the tournament after being edged in a shoot to decide the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship.

 

Lynn University (14-1-0) and senior Kenneth Visquez dropped a 2-1 decision to West Florida in the second round of the NCAA Division II tournament, after knocking out Rollins 3-0 in the first game.  The Fighting Knights were the Sunshine State Conference champions.  Kenneth has 4 goals and 5 assists on the year,

The University of Incarnate Word (14-3-3) and Ljubomir Kocic earned their fifth straight trip to the NCAA tournamnent with a perfect 6-0 record in the Heartland Conference.  They bowed out in round one with a 2-0 loss to Midwestern State.  Ljuboir has three goals and one assist on the year and has been named by CoSIDA to the first team Academic All-District Team. 

.Franklin Pierce (17-2-3 ) was tripped up by Southern Connecticut State in the second round fo the Division II Tournament.  After wining the Northeast-10 Conference, the Ravens downed Southern New Hampshire in round one.  Willie Davis (BRSC) is an assistant coach for the Ravens

 

NCAA Division III Men & Women

The Stevens Institute of Technology (15-3-3) and Meghan Tennyson captured their fourth straight Skyline Conference championship but lost 2-0 to  Worcester State in the first round of the NCAA tournament.  Meghan has played in all 20 of the Ducks games and is second on the team in scoring with 6 goals and 4 assists.  She was named to the All-Skyline second-team

 

NJCAA Men & Women

Oxford College of Emory University (12-2-4) and Sarah Myers made a great run for the national championship, but fell the semifinals in PK's to Richmond Community College.  Sarah pulled her team even with a goal in the final ten minutes, sending the match into OT and PKs.  They had  made it to the final four of the NJCAA tournament with a 2-0 win over Holyoke.  In the first round of tournament play, they netted a 4-0 win over Gordon College.  Then they prevailed over Howard Community College in PK's.  Sarah is a co-captain of the team.

Conference Honors

At the risk of missing some of our LA Players Accomplishments, the following players have been very successful, even though their teams did not reach post season play!

David Winchell's (Colorado State-Pueblo) solid performance in goal, landed him on the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All Tournament Team and RMAC Defensive Player of the Week 10-27

Todd Faulkinbery (Centennary) was named to the Mid Continent Conference All Newcomer Team

Terrence Johnson (Stevens Institute of Technology) led his team in scoring with 15 goals and four assists.  The freshman was voted to the First Team All-Metro Region.  The Ducks were ranked No. 10 in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III poll, had four players earn

Roslyn Jones (LSU) led the Tigers in scoring against SEC teams and was second overall.  She was named to the SEC 2nd Team.  Jones and Tennessee transfer Casey Crawford were both mainstays in the Tigers line up.

Danielle Johnson  (Ole Miss) was named to the SEC 2nd Team as well.  Johnson and teammate Christine Breaux, were big contributors to Ole Miss's success.  These LA players have started all of their games.
