Making the NCAA or NAIA tournament is a great accomplishment,  These Louisiana athletes have helped their teams succeed in 2004.

NCAA Division I Men & Women

The University of Maryland (17-6-2) did it again; ended their season in the NCAA Semifinal for the third year in a row.  The Terps and Indiana (the returning and current national champs) played through two overtimes with a 2-2 score, but Indiana scored 48 seconds before the game went to PK's to send the Terps home.  Maryland downed St. John's 1-0 to advance to the Final Four (St. John's had knocked the Terps out in the Semifinals last year).   Maryland went down to the wire with Creighton in the third round of the NCAA tournament.  After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Terps prevailed in PK's.  Maryland earned the third seed in the Division I Tournament (the third time in a row that they had a top seed), and after a first round bye they shutout Hofstra 4-0.  The Terps finished second in both the ACC regular season and tournament, after a comeback from a mid season slump.  Jason Garey (St. Amant/BRSC ’02) had a tremendous year.  He finished with 22 goals (tied for best in the country), captured the Maryland single season points record, was a Mac Herman trophy semifinalist, Sports Illustrated On Campus player of the year, All ACC team, 2nd team Academic All American and 3rd team All American.

Paul Slocum (Slidell/NOSA ’03) and the Wake Forest Deamon Decons (14-5-2) were the number 1 seed in the Division I NCAA Tournament, but after tieing 2-2 they lost in PK's to Virginia Commonwealth in the third round.  Wake won the ACC regular season and knocked out Central Florida 5-0 in the second round.

Notre Dame (13-3-3) came into the tournament with their highest ever seed - #5, and put their 10-match unbeaten streak on the line against Ohio State in the second round.  The Buckeyes upset the Irish 2-1.  Notre Dame were the Big East Conference regular-season champions.  Freshman Joseph Lapira (St. Louis/ Lafayette ‘04) has made a real impact.  He has played in all 19 matches and each of his goals has been a game winner for the Irish.  He is third on the squad with 3 goals and 2 assists (8 points).

University of Central Florida (11-7-2) defeated FIU 1-0 Friday night in Miami to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament where they fell to #1 seeded Wake Forest.  The Golden Knights won their third consecutive Atlantic Sun Tournament with the help of Jaime Planells (St. Thomas Aquinas/NOSA '01), a senior defender with one goal on the year.

Long Island University (9-6-4) has earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1986 by winning the Northeast Conference.  Josh Couvillion's corner kick provided the assist in their 1-0 conference tournamet final win over Farleigh Dickerson with two minutes to play.  David Ledet (Vanderbilt/NOSA '01) is a senior on the team who has 4 assists for the year.  Josh (Jesuit, NOSA '01), also a senior, has recorded one game winning goal and three assists.   The Blackbirds fell to American University 3-0 in round one of the tournament on Saturday.

The number 10 ranked University of Memphis (16-4-1) fell 1-0 to Ohio State in a tough fought game Friday night.  The Tigers were C-USA regular season and tournament champions, and earned their second NCAA tournament berth - the last one being in 1993, after being ranked 2nd to last in the C-USA pre-season poll.  Adam Raborn (Lee HS, BR '98?) joined the Tigers this spring after serving five years in the US Marines.

Texas A&M (18-6) was seeded 9th in the NCAA Division I tournament, after sharing the Big  XII Conference title and winning the Big XII Tournament.   Melissa Garey (St. Amant/BRSC ’04) and the Aggies hosted the opening weekend.  They dominated Texas State 10-0 on Friday night, but let Illinois slip past them 2-1 on Sunday.  Melissa was part of the Number One Recruiting Class in the country and had the honor of playing before the biggest crowds in college soccer.  She scored 5 goals and recorded 2 assists on the year.

The University of Michigan (11-9-2) returned to the NCAA tournament as an at large selection from the Big Ten, facing Detriot in round 1.  The Wolverines fought back from a 3-0 deficiet at half time, but could only manage two second half goals.  Theresa Dwyer (Mt Carmel/JFC ’01) was forced to the sidelines this, her senior, year with an ACL injury.
