Many Louisiana athletes are playing college soccer. The following teams & LA athletes have made it into post season play in 2003: Jason Garey (’02) and Maryland (20-2-1) were seeded second in the NCAA Tournament. In their first game, they dominated Old Dominion, winning 2-1after a first round bye. The University of Akron proved to be no match either, falling 1-0 on a goal by Garey (who leads the team with 13 goals and 25 points). In the quarterfinal match (with snow on the sidelines, they beat St. Louis 4-2 to earn a second trip to the Final Four, but lost to St. John's 1-0 - a PK, great saves by the St. John's keeper, and too may missed chances by the Terps. Paul Slocum (’03) Wake Forest (15-4) – Third seed in NCAA Tournament fell to Virginia - 2-0 in their first game of the tournament. Jamie Planells (’01) , Greg Ortego (’02), David Sommers(’01) & the University of Central Florida (12-5-3) won the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament to earn their second bid to the NCAA’s. FIU downed the Golden Knights 3-1 in the first round. Jonathan Brunet (’01), Paul Begue (’03), Anthony Peters (’02) and Kentucky (12-6-2) got an at large bid to the NCAA’s and defeated Cincinnati on PK's in the opening round. In round 2, they lost a close one to eventual National Champs Indiana 2-1 in the second overtime period. Teresa Dwyer & the Michigan Wolverines (11-8-6) lost to Conneticut in the third round of the NCAA tournament, after 1-0 wins over Oakland and fourth seeded Notre Dame. Dwyer got her first goal of the year - the game winner in the Big 10 semifinal over Wisconson. Melissa Mitchell Ramsey, assistant coach at Penn State has helped the Nittany Lions head into the NCAA Quartefinals again. Alyssa Alterman & Amber Ferchaud ('02) and Tusculum (15-5-1) entered the NCAA Division II Tournament as the SAC Tournament champs. They topped Carson-Newman in the first round but fell to Kennesaw State in the NCAA Division II Championships William Dunn & Ljubomir Kocic (’02) play for Incarnate Word (16-2-2) won the Southland Conference Championship for the third straight year, but fell 0-1 in the second round of the Division II playoffs to Midwestern State Andrew Jackson (’03) Trinity University won the Division III NCAA championship, defeating Drew 2-1. The Tigers completed a perfect season (24-0, including 19 shutouts!), won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and defeated Ozarks 5-0, Piedmont 6-0, and UC- Santa Cruz 3-0, and Wisconsin Oshkosh 3-2 in OT on their way to the finals. Wesley Chase (’02) and John Brown University (13-4-2) lost in the opening game of the NAIA Tournament. Sophomore Chase contributed 2 goals and 4 assists this year. Jordan Wilson (’01) and the University of Mobile (15-4) team advanced to the NAIA Tournament by defeating Auburn-Montgomery in the Region XIII final. They defeated Columbia 3-2 in overtime in round two, but lost their next match to Rio Grande in the quarterfinals.
