The expansion of high school soccer into three divisions in 1996 allowed new powers to emerge in Division II as well as
Division III. Jason Maxwell propelled the Flyers to the title. Maxwell got Loyola into overtime by making a shot off the
crossbar with only two minutes left in regulation. Then, with only 20 seconds remaining until a shootout, Maxwell made his
second goal. Shelly McMillan was in her first year of coaching at Loyola. The previous six years, she coached at Parkway.
The championship game was the first ever played in north Louisiana, and Loyola's championship remains as the only high
school championship for north Louisiana. The game was one of the most-watched games in LA high school soccer history as
over 1200 fans attended.
Baton Rouge started a run of three consecutive state Final appearances with a win against arch rival, St. Paul's.
Baton Rouge, however, would fail to win a championship.
St. Thomas More continued its strong showing, but would be denied a chance at the title again.
